Washington, D.C. — A new report released Wednesday shows that in 2017, the median income in the U.S. was $59,600.
That is up 7 percent from 2016, but it is still less than the $61,300 median income earned by people in New York, the state with the highest income in 2017.
The report from the National Institute on Money in State Politics shows that the median household income in Washington, the nation’s capital, was $54,900.
That was down 6 percent from $57,900 in 2016.
In 2016, the report shows that Maryland, Delaware, and Rhode Island had the highest incomes in the nation, but they also had the lowest median incomes.
