A Texas man charged with bilking his former wife out of more than $1,200 in child support is facing a federal child support fraud charge, his attorney says.
The Texas attorney general’s office said Friday it filed charges against John M. Lee, 44, in Harris County.
It wasn’t immediately clear if Lee had an attorney listed.
Lee is the first to be charged with such a charge, but his attorney has said he has no prior criminal record.
Lee is charged with fraudulently making false statements to the federal court, and the state of Texas is investigating whether he may have defrauded the federal government.
Lee was arrested in August and charged with one count of making false or fraudulent statements in a civil proceeding, according to a news release from the Texas attorney department.
He was also charged with wire fraud, which carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison.
Lee has been in custody since he was arrested.
He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison.
His attorney, John Matura, declined to comment Friday.
